Sam has been telling me for a while that BSTs can work good in parties with other BSTs, and that a full party of BSTs each with different subs can be like an Alliance with normal party exp.
I never believed him until I finally saw it in action this weekend!
I was helping a friend in the LS get her Kazham airship keys when we saw a party of at least 5 BSTs in the Dunes. They had charmed a sheep, a fly, a pug, and maybe something else, and were sluaghtering gobs. They had a Galka BST/WAR who would be the tank if needed, a Taru BST/WHM and a Taru BST/RDM that kept everyone alive, and a Hume BST/BLM who would nuke. It was incredible to see, and, when I asked them between battles how much EXP they were getting, they said they were averaging about 120 per battle (with minimal downtime). Not bad!
So my mind has been reeling with the possibilities of a BST party since then and Ive decided to go ahead and get a BST advanced job. I want to participate in a party like that, but I think the only way is if I can get everyone else in the clan hip to the idea.
My challenge to everyone is to get BST and level them up to 15. Once you hit 15, let's coordinate a time for 6 of us to meet in the dunes, each with different subs, and try this all-BST party out for ourselves.
It sounds like a lot of fun. What does everyone say?
I'm game...
If I can just get to 30 first, LOL :-)
Then, I really do want to go for SMN. It should be a pretty good fit with either my RDM or WHM jobs.
Beastmasters Unite!
I am absolutely in on this one. I wanted to be a beastmaster when I was still a young mithra. I've seen a couple people trailing along magnificent animals and I really want to join in on this. So as soon as I level up (20 is it?) I want to go with you guys to get the subjob. I'm so glad I'm not alone on this!

Level confusion
I know I was confused when I started as to what the levels meant and what happenned, so lemme give you a quick guide to the level highlights:
Level 15: For you (a THF) you get a boost to your gilfinder, meaning you'll start earning more money from your beastmaster kills.
Level 18: Ability to do sub-job quest. Basically, head to Selbina (this is the easier sub-job quest) and take it. Ask around, people will help, or, wait for me and I'll help you get your items. After you do the sub-job quest, can have a main and a sub job.
Level 20: Ability to do chocobo quest. Head to Jeuno and feed a sick choco until he's better. It takes 6 real world hours, and 6 Wadi Grasses. Again, I'll help you get these when it's time if you want.
Level 30: Ability to take advanced job quests (including BST). Getting to 30 is hard, and then each advanced job has a different quest for them. Some are hard, some are easy.
Level 55?: Cap where you have to take some quest (kill something nasty) to make it past. I've not made it there (obviously), anyone want to verify this is the level where that happens?

RSE @ 33
You forgot RSE @ 33. RSE can really help if you ever do a job thats nontraditional.
Idunno
I'm not sure I'd include RSE as part of this. RSE is a big hassle for gains you'll really only see if you are levelling up a non-traditional job (or, are a balanced race like Hume).
For example, I really don't want Elder's RSE for Galka. Why? How in the hell will I be able to level one of my mage jobs up to 33 in order to use it?
Sure, for others it may be helpful (hell, Mithra's Savage-ware is pretty cool.. and the Elvaan RSE rocks for Elvaan mages), but if you really don't need it, why bother?
Also, 33 is really a rough estimate. Some armor (Galka for example) is lower. Some may be higher.

Theres always a need
Let's just look at a Galka DRK or PLD for example. Can you think of better equipment at those levels for that?
What about Elvaan WHM or RNG? Or Taru NIN (they rock)?
Plus, doing the RSE is a rite of passage IMHO. I think everyone should do it.
Thieving
Thanks for the level steps. I didn't know most of that. I have looked up the stats on Thief though and lvl 15 is a really good time. I'll get Sneak Attack and Treasure Hunter I. So I'll start getting more items and be able to pull a Pearl Harbor on my enemies. Well, as soon as I hit 18 you'll know and it'll be time to head out to Selbina.
Selbina earlier
You'll have a really hard (and lonely) time trying to get to 18 on your own or hanging around Windy. I'd strongly recommend getting your arse up to Selbina sometime before 15 or so. At 15, you should be able to get some pretty decent parties up there and you'll really start learning the ropes of the party system. Plus, at 15 you can start earning your quest items as you are levelling.
Get to 10-12 this weekend and I'll take you up to Selbina. I've already done it for both Jakes (Bombastic and Ravenclaw ;-)

Kraken
Hey, I'm down for it.
What we may also want to do is do the quest together. That Kraken aggros like a mofo, and if one person would be willing to sacrifice for the greater good, we could open it up for a bunch of others to obtain the item...

count me in
I've got a lvl 30rdm/15wmg- I can get everyone in there with sneak/invis and should be able to keep that sacrifice alive to zone hopefully. I love regen !! Yes I'm definitly in. I want to give all of the jobs a shot, hence why my bard only made it to lvl 5 bah !!
Great idea.. you get to be the lamb ;-)
With your big galka HP, you're the one to be sacrificed ;-)
But seriously, name the time and I'm there.
