Tha MonkeyClan of the Angry Monkey (FFXI)
Who are you? (General ClanAM members)
Submitted by sam on Fri, 07/29/2005 - 03:27.

I've been asked what I do for a living a few times in the LS chat, so I figured I'd start a thread where people can post who they are and what they do (if they wish).

Well, for me, my name is Sam Hart in real life (Maior, in the game, obviously). My resume is online here.

Currently, I am a Platform Engineer working for Progeny Linux Systems. I work on the Platform Services Team. Primarily what I do there is create customized Linux distributions for customers. You probably use stuff like what I make every day, but don't know about it. Stuff like what I make runs Telephone and Cellphone services, web-sites, various embedded devices, etcetra and so-forth (though, it may or may not be what I specifically worked on, or even what came from Progeny... Linux is actually quite huge and we, obviously, aren't the only fish in the sea :-)

One thing I've done which you can see is my rpmstrap tool. rpmstrap is a tool that allows you to bootstrap several different RPM-based GNU/Linux distributions (if you don't know what that means, don't worry... my tool is really designed for very advanced GNU/Linux persons). I've done other stuff, but this is something that I can actually show you right now :-)

Erm... I used to draw a comic strip called Strenua Inertia long ago in a galaxy far far away. I'm also a giant jackass who is known to be a real dick (if you don't believe me, see my Evil Page).

I collect video games... been collecting since I was 4 years old (Pong, baby). Currently have well over 5000 games and a buttload of systems. Let's put it this way... it is easier to name systems I don't have rather than ones I do.

I'm a divorcee who has recently been married to my second wife.

So... who are you, and what do you do? Post your info here (no obligations... don't do it if you don't want to).

Me, Myself and I...

Hi, I'm Cat AKA Misty. This is my third character but it had been a while since I had played so we deleted my other characters and I gave my stuff away to my hubby(PLD) and son(DRK)who also play and are both in sixties levels. Now I am a baby RDM again. I currently work in the call center department of a credit union in the credit card and customer service departments.

hmmmm...guess i'm up next

well where should i start? well...life really began when i joined the army right out of highschool. i think the biggest error in judgement i made. i turned down persuing my dream of being an accomplished artists/animator, had awards, certificates and such, to pick up a semi automatic weapon. mainly because i felt i wasnt good enough. also i was always depressed at the time, full of angst, hate towards humanity i decided i wanted to be a contract killer/mercenary(no joke). and what better place to get started than in the armed forces. so with dillusions of grandure i set off to be a tool of death. fortunately or unfortunately fate had plans contrary to my own. i ended up stuck with the same unit for 5 yrs. heh maybe u've heard of them the "first cavalry division" most highly deployed next to the marines and most famous in the movies^^. i did some note worthy things, things people will never hear about or believe^^. heh but anyway i ended up with a wife and 2 kids ! lol me mr. killeverybody go figure, i'm still confused.i'm a little off, eccentric if you will at times , but harmless hehe. i soon after leaving the service picked up his game. i started as a whm but found mnk was faster to lvl. i'm not too clear where i first ran into mai but i remember the second time i ran into him.
it was that very 1st event with the eggs. mai was outside windy , fishing i think, after some chit chat we both decided not to participate in the ivent but instead to explore the game further and see what or go as far as we could go. lol i remember how awe struck we were when we got to la thiene, heh two newborns to the game^^. anyway i remember we seperated there for some time mai went on through la thiene and i went back to windy i guess thats y we're not close in lvl or status right now lol o well. soon after i got a link shell and met val in west ronf. a young warrior showing me log points heh those were the days. yup, and i've been slinging crap with the clan monkeys ever since^^ best group of people i ever met bar-none. Thank you Sam for having me^^

p.s. Val all i have to say about that is GO!! CANES!!!!

Well the only response I have Craig.... ^_^

Is 34-13. Rooooooooooooooooooooll Tide Rooooooooooooooooooooooll!!!!
heh

Bombs away

I'm Bombastic, my real name is Jacob (I'm like one of 3 Jacobs in the clan). I've been playing in the clan since its birth way back when we were only playing Quake 2 across a dial-up connection LOL.

Right now, I live in Italy and work in system localization (funny enough, I am responsible for the english translation code inside italian software, and I can't speak italian! Thank goodness for GNU gettext!) I moved to Italy from the states last November. I am here only on contract, so I will be returning home in 4 more months (unless they renew my contract).

I am a Linux fanatic, like Sam (and the rest of the old-time ClanAM people). Been working with Linux systems since I first contributed code to Sam's Tux Typing. Originally a Mandrake man, I have now seen the light and use Debian.

I have been playing for nearly a year now, but my highest job is still only RDM 36. I don't get much time to play so I'm usually only on for a few hours per week.

Well I guess.

Well as most of the clan knows I am the youngest in the Clan. I think I'm the youngest in the clan. Am I? I dunno most likely though. Anyways only being 14 I dun got much to say. So ya I'm only 14 and my name is always said wrong! Jeez people say Mil-on when its spoken My-lan. Also I was not named after that stupid city in Itlay Milan. Even if it is spelled the same exact way. Well I'm bout to be in high school and well thats all about me. So know you get to know how I got in the clan though XI. Well if you were here from the start of the PS2 relese you would have been in Terial's LS. I dont remember how Maior got a Linkshell (Kyler maybe?) but he got one then made CoAM FFXI then we get to here. Lol short but what do you expect?

Never knew Xil...

Honestly, Xil, I never really knew you until we got you into ClanAM. I was part of the other LS very briefly before people started migrating away. In fact, I started the ClanAM one mainly because people from my old Clan were moving into the game and because I didn't want to lose all my other friends to another LS :-)

As I recall, Kyler gave you the ClanAM LS... and that was when I first met you.

FWIW, here is my first record on "Maior's Journeys" where I talk about you: http://maior.samhart.net/oldnews/2004-Aug-news.shtml

MNK/WHM

Actually, I was a 30-something MNK at the time, and subbed WHM. I wore my Galka RSE which gave me a lot of MP and because I was a 30-something MNK, it meant I never got hurt :-)

Let the mAdNeSs begin....

Boy, it's always tough to follow an act like that Sam! ^_^

I am Valsery and I have a probl...wait....different introduction. My rl name is Brian Barnes and I am a Videoconference technician. I work for a large lawfirm in Atlanta and have been here for a year now. I've worked in several areas of technology over the last few years. I could run simple loop programs at a very early age on my Commodore 64 (l33t!), and gained a deep knowledge of software from that point forward. In my teens, I started working in hardware by building my own computer and what not. After graduating HS and moving to Arizona for a time, I returned to Atlanta to focus on school. Since I was a jack-of-all-trades, I took up computer networking to round out my skills.

Aside from tech, I also own more systems than I know what to do with. Even as I replaced my Atari, NES, SNES, etc, I could never let them go. I don't believe I can rival Sam's game total, but I have my own problems. ^_^ In fact, during the NES's tenure I owned the power pad, power glove, a controller free "hand sensor", and a headgear set with eyescope and voice activation to fire. I don't see that stupid Duckhunt dog laughing now!!!!

I celebrated my second year of marriage this last June and am a fanatic about college football. SEC baybeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

I met Sam in the Gusgen mines while we were independantly working on our airship passes. We happened to cross paths along the way, so I stopped to ask him a question about this drop. Sam (much like now) answered my question, then asked if I'd like to party up with him and we'd work together. We went through the normal party chit-chat and quickly found ourselves laughing our way through the mines.

2 weeks later Sam looked me up and hunted me down to hand me the LS. This is where I met several other of our original members and things have not been the same! We've been buddies since and both share what some would call " A strong dislike " for a certain IT company who makes crappy products like "Winblows 98." ;D

So yeah...whose up next?

Pal mines

Heh, just shows how long ago it was for us, but it was "Palborough Mines" :-)

We did spend a lot of time in Gusgen trying in vain for RSE tho... a long time ago. In fact, I think we both went to Gusgen our first times together. That place really freaked us out, and we never got the RSE until I was a lot higher :-)

What a lot of people don't know is that Val and I had a great deal of difficulty doing our rank 3-3 mission. We probably spent 2 months trying to do it because we had no high level help and everyone we knew was only 25-30 :-) Not to sound like an old grouch but, "when I was your age... walk to school... in snow... up hill... both ways..."

Vis Maior's Journeys

You are correct sir

Yes it was Pal mines - loosing my mind with that old age.
And yeah my frist trip to Gusgen was the RSE trip with the creepy giggling and kids manifesting everywhere. *shudder*

As far as mission 3-3 - hehe I wasn't able to finish it until returning a couple of months ago. ^_^ To say it was a bit frustrating seeking help in Jeuno or at Delkfutts for hours would be an understatement. :P

Discusting Children

Yes those damn children are very very creepy. I swear they took the Keys just to mess with me!

Who am I?

Well, I'm actually kind of paranoid, so I never give out much information. With that in mind, I can say I work through a tech support contracting agency associated with elance, am a FreeBSD security nut who is warming up to Gentoo, and am an old-school VMS enthusiast.

I've known sam since he and I worked at Intel long ago, and have been a part of ClanAm since probably 1999 (back when all we did was play Unreal Tourney). Back then, I went by the name "a_little_girl". As far as I know, I was the only person to successfully play the game under FreeBSD (most everyone else played under Linux).

Second thread

LOL, you know, this is the second thread we've had on this topic. Way back in November 04, Drifter started a thread just like this here.

I think that was just Drifter

I think that was just Drifter and Mai talk'n.
